Foreigners wearing flip flops in Manila?

I would just like to know what Filipino people think of foreigners wearing flip flops in places like malls and such? I%26#039;m a 20 sumthing Australian born filipino who wears beach culture clothes like Billabong and Ricurl inspired things and as anyone would know flip flop thongs are a must for the clothes. Do people there frown upon or simply don%26#039;t care?

Foreigners wearing flip flops in Manila?
i don%26#039;t think there%26#039;s ever an issue about wearing flip flops around manila... wearing anything you want don%26#039;t give you a pass to jail. and anyway you%26#039;re a foreigner we give allowances for that!
Reply:Filipinos wear flip flops to the mall, too.
Reply:It%26#039;s ok, people here don%26#039;t care about what you wear. And if you really are a Filipino, then act normal like as if you were born here...:)
Reply:There is nothing wrong whatsoever in wearing flip flops (we, in Australia, call them thongs) to the malls.

Golly gosh it%26#039;s only a shopping center not the Ritz. Sure there are places that you shouldn%26#039;t wear the thongs and Tranquil has covered those.

I find thongs to be extremely comfortable and prefer them to shoes. If that makes me a slob then so be it.

If an Establishment wants to bar me from entering their premises because I am wearing thongs than that is their perogative and their loss but as yet that has not happened.

Kojak, old buddy, I do think you need to lighten up a bit.
Reply:There are places where dress codes are in effect. Clubs (because one would not dare risk the delicate toes to be stepped on by high heels), restaurants that offer fine dining (or risk being barred from entering), church (out of respect to the Diety, especially if one can afford to buy a pair of shoes).

Otherwise, life is cool, happy travels, dude/dudette.
Reply:i wear flip flops to the malls... so do my friends. go ahead and wear your flip flops. it%26#039;s okay with us.

what is frowned upon is people wearing flip flops that are cheap imitations of say havaianas, dupe or ipanema.
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t care what people say as long as your comfortable wearing it. It is not them who is going to suffer if you are not comfortable with what you are wearing especially when it comes to walking so go ahead and have fun! Be comfortable! Enjoy your stay!
Reply:I personally think that there%26#039;s nothing wrong with wearing flip flops in the malls (foreigners and locals alike). It%26#039;s not like you%26#039;re going to a job interview when you have to dress appropriately, a mall is a place where you go to relax and be entertained so I think it%26#039;s permissible to wear whichever you like (especially if it%26#039;s something that makes you feel comfortable).
Reply:Do not know what Filipinos think. I know what I think. I also do not break my thinking into catagories according to nationality; %26quot;one size%26quot; thinking fits all. While it is not my place to tell my host how to dress in his own home, that does not prevent me from having an opinion.

I see people, including foreigners, dressing inappropriately everyday. You should dress according to where you are. It is not appropriate to wear your bath robe to the mall, why would you wear your beach attire there. People eating do not necessarily enjoy you parading around with naked feet. If shoes do not fit with your outfit, may be your outfit does not fit.

While I am at it let me point out some other gross dressing and conduct faux paux. Many people , particularly foreigners ,like to wear big baggy T-shirts which expose their naked arm pits and half their floppy chest. There is some attire that is just not suited for some people. Many of the men wearing %26quot;athletic%26quot; T-shirts are not athletes. A four hundred pound fat dude or dudette should not wear a thong. It is simply ugly and gross. I do not care how comfortable you are; it makes others uncomfortable. If you do not care what people think of you at least have consideration for what others have to suffer.

You do not walk around the mall in your athletic jock strap. You do not scratch your butt and adjust your family jewels in public. You do not cough or spit in polite company without labeling yourself as an uncouth boob. Why would you think dressing for the beach would be appropriate for the mall? Do you also wear your pajamas to the cinema?

A lot of people, particularly young people want to %26quot;express themselves%26quot;. Usually at someone elses expense.

If you see someone walking down the street dress like a police officer, you think he is probably a policeman. If you see a man dressed like a soldier you figure he is a military man. So it is natural when you see a man dressed like a slob with no regard for anyone but his own comfort, you figure he is an insensitive selfish slob. No, you ain%26#039;t %26quot;Kool Dude%26quot;.
Reply:It doesn%26#039;t matter what you%26#039;re wearing as long as you%26#039;re comfortable. We also wear flip flops in going to the malls.
Reply:i wear flipflops in malls, people don%26#039;t care as long as you%26#039;re comfortable
Reply:as long as it%26#039;s not tsinelas it%26#039;s okey.
Reply:we wear flip flops to the mall, too, so why shouldn%26#039;t you? it%26#039;s perfectly fine.
Reply:there used to be a time, decades ago, it was socially frowned upon to wear flip-flops or %26quot;tsinelas%26quot; outside of the house or to the malls. but with the arrival of upscale fliplops like havaianas, it%26#039;s been fashionable to do so. so go ahead...and have fun in the philippines!
Reply:most people probably wouldn%26#039;t care.

i see MANY foreigners where i live in the philippines and they all wear variances of flip flops and sneakers
Reply:If u feel comfortable wearing that, it should be fine.. Also Filipino people doesn%26#039;t care about what u wear. Only maybe but not sure, your fellow white people would care. I forgot you are Australian born Filipino. But in fine restaurants, sure u would get noticed.
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t mind anyone wearing flip flops as long as their feet don%26#039;t stink up the room.
Reply:allan y... tsinelas and flipflops are the same... and Kojak maybe a little too serious about his answer, but I have to give him credit. he%26#039;s right.

Ok... if youre a 20 sumthing Australian born Filipino, then you can get away with wearing beachwear at the mall. But people might find it silly to see a Filipino guy wearing beachwear in November..

Have fun ;)
Reply:Filipinos have no problem with this.

But, as in any country, if the establishment is a tad classier for you to be wearing fliflops inside, don%26#039;t even attempt to try to get in. You can eat at Pizza Hut or TGIF wearing sandals or flipflops, but please stay away from the restaurants or shops who are too polite to be requiring a dress code.
Reply:No one will care as long as it looks neat.
